Map of Lewisburgh

Due to its location, Lewisburg was perfectly situated to prosper in the 1800's as a trade center for Pennsylvania's agriculture. It is located on the Susquehanna River. This made the borough the ideal location for mills, which needed a water supply and transportation to take materials to and from the mill. Lewisburg also had two railroads running straight through it. The two train lines and river allowed barges and trains to travel to and from Lewisburg with passengers, materials, and finished products. The placement of this borough became a perfect storm of prosperity with businesses creating wealth by shipping their goods out of town.

This map was drawn in a bird's-eye view, which presented any city in the best way possible. The map of Lewisburgh is one of many that were drawn in the late 1800's in the burgeoning cities that had sprung up across the nation as a result of innovations in transportation, wide-spread industrialization, and massive population growth. Even smaller communities that retained much of their village character, such as Lewisburg, boasted of their few factories and commercial enterprises.
